~ "We Will Remember Them" ~
"The Tree of Life" In the main concourse of the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa is an emblematic symbol called "the tree of life." The tree and its leaves present a beautiful way to remember someone or to celebrate a special event, sorrowful or otherwise. The act of remembrance is effected by the purchase of a leaf of the tree. Colonel John Gardom (retired) of the Lord Strathcona Horse paid tribute to Sergeant Leger, Corporal Dyer, Private Smith and Private Green by purchasing a leaf of the tree at a cost of one thousand dollars. Vince Kennedy, Ed McMahon, John Gardam and Lloyd Swick were present for the unveiling on the a.m. of the 9th May 2002. Colonel Gardam spoke of the close attachment and respect he held for the Patricias. BGen Kennedy, on behalf of the Regiment, gave thanks for the generous gift and reflected on how the Tree and its leaf with the names of the four soldiers was an impressive way of honouring these Patricias who sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism.
Left to Right: BGen Vince Kennedy, Ed McMahon (resident of Perley), Col John Gardom, Lloyd Swick. Paul Finn the Perley Rideau Foundation Managing Director took the pictures. Ed, the CSM, was on hand to ensure the ceremony went well — it did. Prez note: Our sincere thanks to Lloyd Swick for this submission. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing . . . And a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing inefficiency and demoralization." — Petronius, A.D. 66. prez note: I have read this often over the years, with each and every perusal I re-live the horror story of 'Hellyer the Hun' who single-handedly brought about the inevitable destruction of Canada's military. And, in particular, our regimental system and traditions as we knew and cherished.
